The United States took a tough stance in trade talks with Japan this week, warning Tokyo that dramatic action is vital to preventing a rupture in transpacific ties, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday.

The official said Japan seemed quite receptive to the aggressive U.S. tone, but speculated that Tokyo simply tempered its behavior in anticipation of next week’s meeting between President Clinton and Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa.

Japanese officials refused to comment on the talks.
