Child Abuse

* “Murder Case Opens Eyes to Horrific Tale of Child Abuse” (Sept. 9) portrays a grim reality of our times--child abuse. It continues to amaze me that while the majority are good, caring people, we are still too wrapped up in our own personal microcosms that when abuse is happening at our doorstep we do nothing. No child should ever have to endure abuse of any kind, period.

The obvious tolerance we have for such things is the same tolerance we have for gang warfare, drive-by shootings, carjackings, etc. These heinous acts are committed by so few that our society could quickly turn the tide and award ourselves with a civilized existence. But we do not. Congress members continue to enjoy inaction, police department budgets continue to be slashed, special interests have made schools to look like an enemy of those they serve, government continues to be run by special interests for the few, and so on.

In the meantime, kids die. What a disgrace to our legacy. People must take charge and take back America or our children and their children will understand the history lessons of the barbarians firsthand.
