Cray to Unveil New Supercomputer Today: Cray Research Inc. was expected to introduce its entry into the growing world of “massively parallel computers,” a new breed of supercomputers that have caught the attention of scientists and put Cray on the defensive. The Eagan, Minn., company has long dominated the supercomputer industry with its traditional, costly vector processor systems. But in the past few years, the new massively parallel machines have won kudos from the supercomputing community for their impressive speeds and lower prices for calculating scientific challenges. The official launch of the system, which Cray calls a T3D, is key to the firm’s future and its plans to grow revenue. Traditional Cray machines use fewer processors and process the data in a different manner than the new machines.
