THOUSAND OAKS : Wilson, Hope Invited to Jordan Dedication
Gov. Pete Wilson and entertainer Bob Hope are among the guests invited to a Halloween Day ceremony to mark the formal dedication of Jordan Ranch near Thousand Oaks into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 31 at the 2,300-acre ranch, said Jean Bray, spokeswoman for the National Park Service. The public is welcome to attend.
Other dignitaries invited include former U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston, Congressmen Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) and Anthony Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills) and Ventura County Supervisor Maria VanderKolk, Bray said.
The National Park Service in June purchased the sprawling, oak-dotted Jordan Ranch from Hope for $16.7 million. The purchase represents the single-largest acquisition within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a unit of the Park Service that is stitching together a network of mountain parks and trails in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
The acquisition pushes National Park Service holdings within the National Recreation Area to about 20,400 acres--well on its way to the eventual goal of 35,000 acres in federal ownership.
