A Chinese man, wielding a knife and bottles of seeds he claimed were explosives, hijacked an airliner Thursday and requested political asylum for himself and two family members on board, officials said.

Yang Mingde, 29, his wife and 8-year-old son were detained by police after the plane landed safely at Taipei International Airport.

The Russian-made TU-154 was allowed to return to China with 66 passengers and crew members, officials said. No one was hurt. It was the fourth Chinese commercial jet hijacked to Taiwan since April.
