Volunteers distributed flyers of a 12-year-old girl Saturday after an intruder with a knife abducted her from her bedroom, police said.

Polley Hannah Klaas was kidnaped late Friday night as she played with two friends, police Sgt. Mike Krens said. The girl’s mother was asleep in another room.

The man, who may have entered the house through an unlocked window, bound and gagged all three girls, then left with Polley, he said.

After 20 to 30 minutes, the two friends managed to free themselves, then woke up Polley’s mother, who called police.

The identity of the intruder was not known, Kerns said. Investigators do not suspect a relative or former family member, he said.

The FBI and Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department are helping in the case, police said.

Meanwhile, volunteers distributed flyers with a picture and description of the girl and a sketch and description of the intruder.

Polley was described as white, 4 feet, 10 inches tall, with a thin build. She has curly brown, shoulder-length hair and was wearing a short white skirt and a pink shirt when she was abducted.

The suspect was described as a white man, 30 to 40 years old with a medium build and dark or dark gray hair and a full dark beard. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the kidnaping.

Police also are looking for a primer-gray Toyota Tercel. It is not known if the car had any connection to the case, but Krens said a lone man was seen driving through the neighborhood earlier in the day on Friday.
