Damon Huard passed for three touchdowns and Napoleon Kaufman ran for two as No. 15 Washington defeated San Jose State, 52-17, on Saturday for its school-record 16th consecutive home victory.

The Huskies (3-1) rolled up 556 yards--288 passing and 268 rushing--in the tuneup for next week’s Pacific 10 Conference game at No. 17 California. The Spartans (0-5) are off to their worst start since going 0-6 in 1923.

Huard, a sophomore starting his first season, completed 15 of 17 passes, including 10 of 11 for 177 yards in the first half, for 247 yards. Kaufman, a junior, had his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and seventh of his career. He ran 20 times for 118 yards, including touchdowns of one and 10 yards.

Huard had a 52-yard scoring pass play to Jason Shelley and also threw five yards to Richard Thomas and three yards to Leif Johnson for touchdowns. Shelley caught four passes for 142 yards.

Jeff Garcia of San Jose State was 13 of 33 for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Garcia was intercepted three times and the Huskies also recovered two fumbles.

Washington won 15 consecutive home games from 1981 to 1983. The Huskies haven’t lost in Seattle since the final home game of the 1990 season, against UCLA.

The Huskies led by 28-10 at halftime, scoring the first two times they had the ball. Washington drove 70 yards for its first touchdown, the Huard-to-Thomas scoring pass with 3:40 gone.

The Huskies made the score 14-0 on Kaufman’s one-yard touchdown run to cap a drive that started on the San Jose State 47 after Russell Hairston recovered a fumble by Spartan receiver Jason Lucky.

San Jose State made the score 14-7 with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Garcia to Brian Lundy in the second quarter, but the Huskies scored only 23 seconds later.

Huard took the center snap and handed off to Beno Bryant, who appeared headed for a sweep around the right end. Bryant then handed off to Eric Bjornson for an apparent reverse. But Bjornson pitched the ball back to Huard, who threw downfield to Shelley, who was wide open at the five and scored easily.
