The Howard Johnson group of hotels has significantly expanded the benefits that it introduced for senior travelers in 1992 with its Travel Savers Plus Club.

Membership in the club provides lodging discounts ranging from 15% to 50% off published rates for those over the age of 50, or who are members of recognized senior organizations. Discounts are valid at 550 Howard Johnson Hotels and Lodges, Plaza Hotels, Park Square Inns and HoJo Inns in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Another membership benefit provides access to the TravelAlert system, through which members receive significant travel discounts on more than 500 international and domestic tours, cruises and vacations. Members also receive discounts on tourist attractions, car rentals, airline tickets and merchandise.

An increasing number of seniors are expressing interest in travel on freighters and cargo liners, but they often are unable to find proven sources of information on this mode of travel at sea. Questions about accommodations and food, costs compared to regular cruises, itineraries and service are among those most frequently asked by mature travelers.

To address these and other inquiries, the Cruise and Freighter Travel Assn., through its publication TravLtips, offers a free booklet that provides answers to the 35 most commonly asked questions.
