In Defense of a Small Hotel in Paris

Share

I enjoyed the article on “Small Paris Hotels” by Christopher Reynolds (Sept. 19). However, I take exception to one piece of information. In one paragraph, he made reference to “stratospheric prices and rude service” and in the same paragraph he mentioned the Hotel L’ Angleterre. I must disagree with this association.

I spent four nights at this hotel in August, 1993, and the experience was perfection. The hotel has a wonderful location and a splendid history.

But more important are the physical amenities. Our room was quite large with high beamed ceilings and beautiful antique furnishings and overlooked a lovely, peaceful courtyard. The public rooms were warm and charming and a very satisfying breakfast was served in the morning room. The continental breakfast was included in the room rate which, by Paris standards, was moderate. As to the woman at the front desk, I found all the hotel employees to be very courteous, helpful and pleasant.

While I found “Crisis Prices,” the article on new Parisian restaurants (Sept. 19), interesting, I feel strongly that all such articles should include at least two items: days of the week the establishments are closed, at least for dinner, and what credit cards are accepted or if none are.

As someone who has spent part of the last eight years in Paris and will be there next month, I found a minor error:

Le Petit Germain, rue Dupin, is in the 6th arrondissement , not the 7th.

The author did an excellent job of describing six of the restaurants in every respect, and clearly established price ranges, a real reader service. Because the slick travel magazines fail doing either almost always, I have stopped reading them.

You are to be commended for realizing many of us clip and save articles; thank you for eliminating the “jumps.”
