Japan Expected to Lower Trade Barriers: The Japanese government is expected Thursday to unveil the proposals in response to growing pressure from foreign trade partners and domestic industry. The proposals are the work of an advisory panel chaired by Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa and including officials from the central bank, Japan’s export-import bank and the Keidanren business federation. The proposals reportedly include tax incentives to encourage more foreign companies to invest in Japan, plus the abolition of tariffs and import curbs where they serve only to protect local industries.
