Mergers at Record High in 3rd Quarter: The increase was due to companies using strong stock prices to boost acquisitions, Securities Data Co. said. The company, which tracks corporate marriages, said the dollar value of mergers in the quarter was the third-highest ever. There were 1,594 deals made, the most for a single quarter. Securities Data said the total value of the mergers was up a dramatic 170.6% to $86.77 billion compared to the third quarter of 1992. Goldman, Sachs remained the lead adviser. Securities Data said stock swaps accounted for 68% of the quarter’s total merger volume.
