Update: The Denny Trial

Share

A look at key developments Monday:

* A black woman who appears to be in her 30s was selected forewoman of the jury of 10 women and two men, who put in their first full day of deliberations. The forewoman, Juror 431, was originally selected as an alternate, but was selected at random on Sept. 9 to serve on the panel after a juror became ill and had to be replaced. During jury selection, the forewoman said it was unfortunate that people vented their frustration by rioting and looting.

* The jury, which is not sequestered, deliberated from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a 1 1/2-hour lunch break, as will be its practice until verdicts are reached. The panel includes four African-Americans, four Latinos, three Anglos and one Asian-American. The men are Anglo and Latino.

* A district attorney’s office technician trained a juror to operate sophisticated video equipment that allows frame by frame viewing of videotaped assaults at Florence and Normandie avenues, where Reginald O. Denny was beaten. The trainee, Juror 334, volunteered for the duty. Several jurors sat in on the session so they can also operate the equipment.
