Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Trial Opens in Fatal Trade Center Blast

In opening statements in the trial of four World Trade Center bombing suspects, prosecutors argued that the fatal blast was planned “to let Americans know (terrorism) could happen here,” while defense attorneys countered that the government’s case was based solely on circumstantial evidence. Expected to last several months, the trial began under heavy guard in a Manhattan courtroom. Six people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in the February explosion at the 110-story twin towers.
