UAW Panel Supports Chrysler Contract: The 150-member council of United Auto Workers local leaders overwhelmingly approved the tentative three-year agreement reached last week with Chrysler Corp., paving the way for the union to tackle industry giant General Motors Corp. The Chrysler agreement is based on the framework of the agreement reached between the UAW and Ford Motor Co. three weeks ago. It calls for the creation of about 900 jobs throughout the auto maker’s manufacturing system, and brings back to the Detroit axle plant some work that had been contracted out to another company. The contract still requires the approval of Chrysler’s 54,000 U.S. hourly workers.
