A man was pulled from his truck Wednesday and stabbed by would-be carjackers, who fled when the truck wouldn’t start.

Michael Martinez, 21, of Covina was sitting in the cab of his truck in a parking lot at Beach Boulevard and McFadden Avenue about 9:55 a.m. waiting for help because the truck had broken down, Lt. Andy Hall said.

Two men approached, and one said, “What’s up?” Hall said. Before Martinez could respond, the men punched him and stabbed him.

They told Martinez they had a gun but did not show it, and demanded his wallet and his truck, police said. They pulled him out of the truck onto the ground, took $67 in cash from his wallet and got into the truck, where the keys were in the ignition. When it wouldn’t start, they ran, Hall said.

Martinez was treated at Huntington Beach Medical Center.

The robbers escaped.
