The Senate voted to provide $150,000 to pay the legal bills of five former White House travel office employees who were dismissed for alleged misconduct but are now being reinstated in government jobs. The amendment setting up a legal defense fund, which passed by voice vote, was offered by Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) and Sen. Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.). Dole has been highly critical of the White House handling of the travel office affair last spring and wants a special counsel to investigate the incident.
