VENTURA : 7-Year Trash Hauler Contract Considered

Share

After more than 15 months of negotiation, the Ventura City Council on Monday will consider awarding Ventura-based E.J. Harrison & Sons an exclusive seven-year contract for hauling trash and recyclable materials.

The $100-million agreement calls for the trash hauler to offer more recycling services to businesses, such as recycling junk mail and magazines. Under the agreement, a green waste collection program that hauls away materials such as yard clippings will be implemented.

By entering into a long-term agreement, the trash hauler will have an easier time obtaining better financing from banks, said Steve Chase, the city’s environmental coordinator. The savings would then be passed on to residents and businesses, he said.

“There were some trade-offs,” said Nan Drake, a spokeswoman for the company. “We were hoping for 10 years--seven years was definitely a compromise.”
