Water Safe Despite Algae, Experts Say

An algae bloom in Castaic Lake may give tap water in western Los Angeles County and southern Ventura County a musty flavor and odor, but the water is safe to drink, water quality experts said Thursday.

No customers have complained, said Metropolitan Water District spokesman Rob Hallwachs. That is probably because the district is drawing water from the bottom of the reservoir and the algae is floating in the upper levels, he said. The problem could clear before the affected water comes through customers’ taps, depending on temperature and wind conditions.

“But we never know,” Hallwachs said. “We thought it would be best to let people know if they wrinkle up their noses or tongues, that is the reason.”

Residents who notice a difference in their tap water don’t need to boil it, but refrigeration might improve the taste, he said.
