NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : U.S. May Take Falcon Off Endangered List

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed removing the Arctic peregrine falcon--one of the world’s fastest birds--from the list of endangered and threatened species, 20 years after it was first listed. Director Mollie Beattie said the proposal underlined the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. The Fish and Wildlife Service will accept public comment on the proposal for the next 90 days and will make a final decision within a year.
