COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Third at Water Polo Tournament

UC Irvine, the seventh-ranked water polo team in the nation, beat Pepperdine, 9-4, to take third place at the NorCal tournament Sunday at Berkeley.

The Anteaters (9-6) narrowly missed upsetting top-ranked Stanford earlier in the day in one semifinal game. The Cardinal won, 8-7.

Peter Muller, David Brunner and Kurt Edler each had two goals in the victory over eighth-ranked Pepperdine. Mike Rall had eight saves for Irvine.

Jeremy Lester, from San Clemente High School, scored three goals for Stanford. Marc Hunt and Greg Hakim had two goals for UC Irvine in the loss to Stanford.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 1, UC Santa Barbara 0--Mark Vaught scored midway into the second half off an assist from Demian Brown for the host Titans (9-4, 2-1). Mike Ammann had two saves, both in the closing minutes to keep Fullerton ahead.

UC Santa Barbara is 5-7, 0-2.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

New Mexico 2, UC Irvine 1--Kelly Reinhart scored in the final minutes to break a 1-1 tie for visiting New Mexico (6-6). P.J. Polowski of Irvine scored earlier in the second half to tie the score, 1-1. It was his 10th goal of the season.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Santa Barbara 8, Cal State Fullerton 1--The Fullerton program, in its first year, continues to struggle. Amber Thompson scored Fullerton’s only goal midway through the second half. Phronsie Franco, Felicia Hayes and Amy Gutowski each had two goals for UC Santa Barbara (8-1). Cal State Fullerton is 2-8-1.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, William & Mary 1--Stacy Mitchell had 15 kills as host UC Irvine won, 15-6, 6-15, 15-7, 15-10. Irvine is 11-7 and William & Mary is 4-10.
