Apple to Distribute Software on CDs: Apple Computer Inc. said it would begin marketing software for Macintosh and Windows-based personal computers on compact disks. The service, called Software Dispatch, will distribute free CD-ROMs--short for compact disk, read-only memory--containing dozens of software programs by other manufacturers that do everything from word processing to spreadsheets. Purchasers will be able to test the programs. They would then use a toll-free number to receive a code to unlock that product on the disk if they wish to purchase it.
