Share

With less than a month to go before the election, Greg Smith has raised more money than the two other candidates combined in the race to fill a vacant seat on the City Council.

Smith listed $4,654 in contributions during the most recent campaign filing period, which ended on Sept. 18. In contrast, Marc Goldstone raised $68 and Alireza Jazayeri raised $3,100.

The candidates are required by law to file the financial statements three times during the campaign. The documents list who has made contributions to each candidate and how the money is being spent. The next statements will be released on Oct. 21 and 29.

Whomever wins the Nov. 2 election will fill the year remaining on the term of William A. (Art) Bloomer, who resigned in July to take a job in Virginia.

The majority of Smith and Jazayeri’s contributions were for more than $100. Smith loaned his own campaign $700, while Goldstone loaned his campaign $931.

Smith also led the pack in campaign spending, with $4,423 worth of expenditures compared to $374 for Goldstone and $2,383 for Jazayeri.

Most of this money went to pay for printing, advertising and postage costs. Both Jazayeri and Smith also purchased booths at the recent Irvine Harvest Festival for about $200 each. Jazayeri spent $1,350 for political consultant work.

Smith, 44, is the owner of an auto-parts distribution company and is an Irvine Unified School District board member. Goldstone, 37, is a principal design engineer at Western Digital and a planning commissioner. Jazayeri, 47, works as a marketing consultant and serves on the Community Services Commission.
