“Big Tuesday” turned out to be huge for top-ranked El Toro, as the Chargers beat third-ranked Corona del Mar, 10-5, in a nonleague water polo game at El Toro High School.

The Chargers (14-1), ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division I, were able to repay the Sea Kings (11-2) for their only loss of the season. Tuesday’s game was a rematch of the South Coast tournament championship game, which Corona del Mar won, 12-11.

“We put a little mark by Oct. 12,” Charger Coach Don Stoll said. “We had something to avenge.”

The Chargers took control of the game early to build a 5-2 halftime lead. Brandon Stout and Brent Stoll each scored twice in the first half.

“I think we surprised them and we kept up the intensity,” Don Stoll said. “I reminded them that they scored five against us (in the third quarter) in the tournament.”

History would not be repeated as the Chargers increased their lead to 9-4 at the end of the quarter.

Stout’s goal with 2 minutes 45 seconds remaining clinched the victory. Stout finished with a game-high four goals.

Sophomore Greg Stoll played an excellent game in goal for the Chargers, making 12 saves.
