From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Helicopter pilot Michael Durant, held captive for 11 days after being shot down in Somalia, underwent a minor operation at Ft. Campbell, Ky., but must wait until blood can be collected from family members for a possible transfusion before having major surgery. An Army spokesman said doctors cleaned out a wound in Durant’s right leg and treated damaged sinuses. But it will be a few days before surgeons can insert a metal rod in the 32-year-old pilot’s fractured right thigh bone.
