IRVINE : Asian Cultures to Be Blended at Festival

Share

Irvine Valley College will play host to the Chinese Autumn Moon Festival next week, but the event will actually celebrate several Asian cultures.

That’s because the festival is being organized by a group of Korean-American, Vietnamese-American and Chinese-American students who make up the Chinese Cultural Assn., one of IVC’s most active student groups.

The club’s name is deceiving, said its Vietnamese-American acting president, Ky Huy.

“It’s really like a club for all Asians,” Huy said. “We have similar cultures and activities. . . . (The association) has representatives for different Asian cultures.”

This diversity will be on display at the Oct. 27 festival, which will mark the first full moon of autumn. The event will primarily focus on Chinese culture, but Huy said that Vietnamese food might be offered along with the usual Chinese fare.

The festival will include a demonstration of wushu, a Chinese martial arts form.

Huy said the festival is not just for Asians. “We hope that people learn about Chinese and Asian culture,” he said.
