A 17-year-old San Gabriel youth was shot in the face Saturday night when suspected gang members raked the car in which he was riding with bullets.
About 30 rounds were fired at the car from two vehicles that sped by with their headlights off about 8:45 p.m. on the transition road from the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway to the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, Irwindale police reported.
The youth was struck by a bullet that passed through his face as he crouched down in the rear seat, Detective Sgt. Raul Breceda said. He was treated and released at Greater El Monte Community Hospital.
The 17-year-old and friends were heading to an In-N-Out Burger in Azusa when two vehicles driven by the suspected gang members pulled up on either side of their car at a red light, Breceda said. The youths did not know their attackers.
Looks were exchanged, and the youths decided to forget the hamburgers and head for the freeway, Breceda said. They saw the two cars follow them onto the freeway, and the attack occurred, he said.
No arrests had been made Wednesday, and the investigation was continuing.
