Convicted killer Thomas Grasso, who has said he wants to be executed for a 1990 killing in Oklahoma, will be returned to New York next week to serve a 20-year-to-life sentence for a 1991 murder there, the state attorney general’s office said Friday.

“New York wants him back. I don’t think it is Oklahoma’s duty any longer to house him here,” said spokesman Gerald Adams.

Oklahoma and New York have been battling in the courts to carry out their respective sentences on Grasso. New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, who has repeatedly vetoed death penalty statutes for his state, had insisted that Grasso be returned to serve his sentence there.
