One sewing shop was closed and another cited for safety violations in a joint state and federal sweep of garment contractors, California Division of Occupational Safety and Health officials reported Wednesday.

Inspectors from both Cal/OSHA and the federal Department of Labor shut down the Susan Sewing Factory in Rosemead for not having valid state registration and worker’s compensation coverage, and cited J & S Fashion in South El Monte for 10 safety violations, including exposed spinning belts on sewing machines.

The unannounced inspections were part of an area crackdown that began Monday, according to Rick Rice of the state Department of Industrial Relations, the department over Cal/OSHA.

Rice said three other inspection raids have occurred this year in the Los Angeles area. South El Monte, El Monte and Rosemead are home to more than 250 registered garment contractors, small firms that sew clothes together for larger garment manufacturing companies.
