Callers Besiege Prudential’s Hot Line: In its first 72 hours of operation, a toll-free telephone line received more than 7,500 calls from investors seeking information about Prudential Securities’ $371-million settlement with state and federal regulators, the state regulators’ organization said Monday. Many other callers got busy signals. Under the settlement, customers who lost money because of Prudential’s misdeeds in the 1980s can apply for compensation from a $330-million restitution fund that is part of the settlement. Prudential will be required to contribute more money if valid claims exceed that amount. The number is (800) 220-9125. The line is manned 24 hours a day; regulators said callers will have an easier time getting through if they call during off-peak hours, after 5 p.m. or before 9 a.m.
