Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Senate Apologizes to Native Hawaiians

The Senate voted, 65 to 34, to issue a formal apology to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of their island kingdom by U.S. agents a century ago. The resolution urged President Clinton to issue a similar apology and that steps be taken “to provide a proper foundation for reconciliation between the United States and the native Hawaiian people.” The resolution now goes to the House.
