Ecuador Indians to Sue Texaco: The class-action suit seeking $1 billion will be filed in New York today, charging that the fourth-largest U.S. oil company contaminated the Indians’ rain forest with crude oil wastes that exposed them to the risk of cancer, said Joseph Kohn, an attorney for the Indians. It will be the first time Indians of the Amazon basin have sought restitution for alleged damage to their environment by an American corporation, the lawyer said. Texaco produced oil in Ecuador from 1972 to 1992, when it turned operations over to the government. A spokesman for Texaco could not be reached for comment.
