U.S. Pushing China on Imports Deadline: Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky said Washington will take retaliatory trade action against China if Beijing fails to substantially open its markets to foreign imports by Dec. 31. China agreed to significantly do away with controls on imports by the end of the year in a memorandum of understanding with the United States signed in 1992. “Thus far, the offers are not adequate,” said Barshefsky, who was in China last week. President Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin are due to meet in Seattle later this month in the highest-level contact yet between the two sides since early 1989--before the army crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing’s Tian An Men Square.
