Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : House to Push for EPA Cabinet Status

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Key House members struck a deal to speed passage of a bill to make the Environmental Protection Agency a Cabinet department. House Government Operations Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. said his panel would pave the way for a vote on the House floor later this month before lawmakers adjourn for the winter holidays. The Senate passed a similar bill in May. Proponents contend that the EPA should be elevated to give it more stature in the international arena and as an equal with other domestic Cabinet departments.
