Share

The City Council this week approved a budget of $25,000 to conduct the municipal election on April 12.

Two council seats are at stake, and four people, including the two incumbents, have so far announced their intentions to run.

Council members Charles E. Puckett and Leslie Anne Pontious, whose terms expire in April, said they are running. Mike Doyle, a restaurant owner, and Tracy Worley, a member of the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission, also are running.

Chief Deputy City Clerk Valerie Whiteman said candidates’ nomination forms will be available by Dec. 20. Filing deadline is Jan. 14. A candidate must be nominated by 20 registered voters to qualify for the nonpartisan election, she said.

More than half of the $25,000 election budget will be paid to an election consultant, who will provide official ballots, ballot counter, printing of sample ballots and precinct supplies.

About $3,500 will be used to pay precinct workers and $2,800 for mailing sample ballots, officials said.

Under the new Voting Rights Act, candidate statements are now required to be translated to Spanish and Vietnamese.

Candidates must now pay a deposit of $550, a $200 increase from the 1992 election, officials said.
