Inaccessible Is Inexcusable for Assn.

Share

I was appalled to read Dana Parsons’ column (Oct. 27) describing the Lake Forest 1 homeowners’ association decision to kick out the Boy Scouts in order to avoid falling under the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This decision is disturbing in several ways, not the least of which is the attitude of discrimination that is suggested as the homeowners’ association tries to find legal maneuvers to get out of making their facility accessible to the disabled.

It is my understanding that several current dues-paying members of the Lake Forest homeowners’ association are paraplegic and in wheelchairs, and are denied use of their facilities. This is clearly a violation of the intent of the ADA.

It is unfortunate that the hysteria and misinformation presented to the Lake Forest 1 homeowners association is being used to deny access to both members and the Scouts. If I was a member of the association, I would be offended by the sign that may be posted on the front of the building stating: “This Facility is NOT Accessible to the Disabled.”
