Young Remembered by Friends and Family

Cleveland Indian pitcher Cliff Young was remembered Sunday as a man who gave his all to baseball and his family and was idolized by the youths in his hometown of Willis, Tex.

Young, 29, died Thursday when the truck he was driving ran into a tree near Willis, about 45 miles north of Houston. About 600 attended a memorial service at Willis High.

Young was the third Cleveland pitcher to die in an accident this year. Steve Olin and Tim Crews died in a March 22 boating accident in central Florida.

John Wathan, who managed the Angels for three months in 1992 while Buck Rodgers recovered from injuries suffered in a team bus crash, is expected to be hired this week as the bullpen coach for the Boston Red Sox, according to sources.

Frank White, the former All-Star second baseman of the Kansas City Royals, is expected to be hired as the Red Sox’s first base coach.

The Canadian government allowed at least four Philadelphia Phillies with criminal records to enter the country for last month’s World Series.

Agents at Pearson Airport in said government officials sent them a memo last month warning them not to stop the players because it would be embarrassing for Canadian authorities.

The agents would not name the players.

Robbie LaBelle and John O’Brien scored goals as the UCLA men’s soccer team won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship with a 2-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. The Bruins gained an automatic berth in next week’s NCAA playoffs. . . . Chris Brown of Santa Barbara won the final event of the 1993 Bud Surf Tour at Ventura. Rob Machado of Cardiff won the overall title. . . .

Arizona’s women’s volleyball team defeated top-ranked UCLA, 5-15, 15-7, 9-15, 15-6, 15-13, ending the Bruins’ 34-match Pacific 10 Conference win streak. . . . Tim Grubb guided Denizen to a faultless ride to win the $100,000 International Jumping Grand Prix of New York at the National Horse Show in East Rutherford, N.J. . . . Nate Wickizer, a seven-foot center, and forward Emile Shepard, have voluntarily left the team and will not play basketball for Utah State this season.
