Voice Powered Technology, a Canoga Park company that sells remote-controlled VCR programmers that respond to voice commands, posted a third-quarter net loss of $3.1 million, slightly more than expected.

The loss in the three months ended Sept. 30 came on sales of $2.2 million.

Voice Powered said the figure includes a reserve of $1.9 million for restructuring costs involving a change in its marketing strategy and $524,000 of non-cash expenses. The sales figure excludes $1.4 million, which was accounted for as part of the restructuring reserve.

In 1992’s third quarter, Voice Powered posted a net loss of $1.3 million on $237,000 of sales.

The company previously said it anticipated a loss of between $2.5 million and $3 million in the latest quarter because of the restructuring. Voice Powered is moving away from direct marketing to retail distribution of its products through Philips Consumer Electronics Corp., a Dutch electronics concern.

For the nine months, Voice Powered had a net loss of $10.8 million, compared with a net loss of $3.2 million for the same period a year ago. Sales jumped to $11.5 million from $237,000 in the year-earlier period.
