Glendora : Officers Bust 7 ‘Speed’ Labs
Glendora police have broken up seven methamphetamine “speed” labs so far this year, and the City Council has allocated an extra $15,000 to clean up the vats of dangerous chemicals present at each bust.
“Speed is the drug of choice out here in Glendora and in the whole San Gabriel Valley,” Officer Brian Summers said. “We’ve been getting a lot of meth labs in the Valley along the foothills.”
About a dozen labs were broken up in 1992, Summers said.
“Occasionally, we’ll try and bill the property owner for the cleanup,” he said. “But in the mobile labs in the area hotels, the city gets stuck with the cleanup.”
The chemicals used to make “speed” can sometimes render dwellings uninhabitable, Summers said.
“The chemicals permeate the carpet, the walls and the paint,” he said.
The council passed the cleanup resolution last Tuesday, City Manager Art Cook said. The funds will be allocated from the city’s asset-forfeiture fund.
