Compton : School Board Meetings Cut to Once a Month; TV Spared

The Compton school board will meet once a month instead of twice, but a plan to stop televising the meetings was tabled this week.
State-appointed administrator Stanley G. Oswalt announced recently that the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees would meet regularly on only the second Tuesday of every month.
The board traditionally met twice a month, but was meeting nearly every week during one stretch of the school system’s ongoing financial crisis.
At Tuesday’s board meeting, Oswalt said the highest priority has to be imposing order on the district’s chaotic finances, not preparing reports for board meetings. The district fell under control of a state administrator in July as a condition for an emergency loan.
To cut costs, Oswalt said Tuesday, he also was considering ending local cable television broadcasts of board meetings. Critics in the community and on the school board assailed the idea, accusing Oswalt of wanting to cut off communications with the public.
After Tuesday’s meeting, Oswalt said he probably will continue to televise board sessions because of the outcry over ending the telecasts.
