Cesar Chavez School

Share

* Voices (Oct. 25) included a picture and map locating the Cesar E. Chavez School in Oxnard, recently renamed after Chavez’s death. Armando Garcia noted that the Oxnard school was “ . . . the first school anywhere to be named for Cesar (Chavez).”

I agree with Garcia that renaming the Oxnard school after Cesar Chavez was a noteworthy accomplishment. Unfortunately, he was not aware that Cesar Chavez School in Coachella was dedicated to the man Oct. 19, 1990, three years ago, while Chavez was alive. Chavez was present for the dedication, where a marble plaque with his picture noted this event.

Chavez was a frequent visitor to the school, and after experiencing the warmth of the students and staff, he gave the school its motto: “The school with a heart.” That phrase, along with the familiar, “ Si, se puede --it can be done,” are present throughout the school.
