Day-Care Program for Preschoolers

Share

It was delightful to see the smiling faces of the West Hollywood preschoolers in your Oct. 28 article, but the article gives the misimpression that the city of West Hollywood is running the program at Plummer Park. In fact, the city contracts with Child and Family Services, a nonprofit organization, to run all of our child care programs. The difference this year is that CFS is using state preschool funds instead of Head Start funds to match the city grant. The preschool director and all the teachers are employees of CFS.

The quote attributed to me is incorrect. The city has not allocated any additional funds to overall programming for child care this year; the allocation remains the same as it has been for the last four years.

A great deal of credit is due to the city of West Hollywood for its foresight and caring in garnering the necessary resources to provide its residents with preschool and day-care programs. However, it is unfortunate that your Oct. 28 article did not mention Child and Family Services (CFS), a private, nonprofit agency that implemented and has been operating the program for the last two years. Funding for this unique “wraparound” program is provided to CFS by the city and the California State Preschool program.

CFS was founded in 1978 to serve children and their families throughout Los Angeles County, and this is only one example of the many programs and services offered by our agency throughout the County. CFS plans a long-term relationship with the city as it continues to serve the young children and their families in West Hollywood.
