World IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Picture a Problem for Beauty Queen

Lebanon’s beauty queen is facing a possible day in court for posing for the cameras with Israel’s contestant in the Miss World pageant in Johannesburg, South Africa. A photograph showing 22-year-old Ghada Turk smiling shoulder-to-shoulder with Miss Israel, 17-year-old Tamara Porat, was splashed across the pages of most of Beirut’s nine dailies with biting captions. Tourism Minister Nicola Fattoush told the daily Al Anwar that Turk “is liable for legal proceedings” because Lebanon is still technically at war with Israel, which occupies a strip of southern Lebanon.
