COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Walker to Start Saturday

Share

Wayne Cook’s condition has not sufficiently improved, so Rob Walker will start at quarterback for UCLA against Arizona State on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

Cook, who suffered a bruised right kidney in the game at Washington State last Saturday, will undergo tests today at UCLA Medical Center, but Coach Terry Donahue said Thursday that he would not be in uniform for the Arizona State game. Donahue also raised some doubt about Cook’s return for the season finale against USC.

Walker played 3 1/2 quarters of the Washington State game, throwing two touchdown passes. But he also threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown and fumbled twice. He started five games a season ago, winning three.

“I’ve gotten a glimpse of a couple of papers, and they’re kind of down on me,” Walker said. “I try to put all that stuff aside.”

Scott Fitterer will be the backup.

Fullback James Milliner, sidelined since the Oregon State game, says he is ready to return and could be available for limited duty Saturday. . . . Ricky Davis will start at tailback. There is a question about Skip Hicks’ availability after he injured his shoulder last week and fell on it during practice.
