Group That Aids La Colonia Gets $40,000
An Oxnard-based nonprofit organization that works to aid residents of the city’s La Colonia district has received three grants totaling $40,000 to help support its programs.
Luann Rocha, co-director of El Centrito de la Colonia, announced the awards Friday.
“We are elated with our success in raising funds,” Rocha said in a statement. The organization plans to hire a fill-time community outreach worker and expand its services to help at-risk youth, she said.
The Proctor & Gamble Fund pledged $5,000 to the group, while the Wharton Foundation contributed $10,000 and the Weingart Foundation gave $25,000, Rocha said.
Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministerial Services, El Centrito opened early last year and provides free counseling, support and prevention services to the youth, families and farm workers of La Colonia. The group’s headquarters are in the Ramona Center, 804 Cooper Road, Oxnard.
