Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Bus Service Improves as Strike Enters 4th Week

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Bus service in the Antelope Valley improved slightly Monday but remained hampered as drivers and mechanics entered the fourth week of a strike against the operator of the region’s public transit system.

About 80 drivers and mechanics, who earlier this year voted to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 572, began a work stoppage Oct. 25 against DAVE Transportation Services Inc. DAVE Transportation operates the bus system under contract with the Antelope Valley Transit Authority.

AVTA officials said local fixed-route bus service was improved Monday after DAVE Transportation completed training drivers who were hired to replace the strikers.

Commuter routes and the supplemental service, primarily intended to meet increased demands before and after school, continue to run at regular levels.

Dial-a-Ride service, which offers door-to-door transportation for seniors and the disabled, is offering limited service.

Striking workers and DAVE Transportation have met with a federal mediator three times but have so far been unable to reach an agreement.
