Freedom Name Change: Freedom Newspapers Inc. in Irvine has changed its name to reflect its interest in a variety of media. The new name: Freedom Communications Inc.
The company owns 26 daily newspapers, including the Orange County Register, and 30 weekly newspapers in 10 states. It also owns the Orange County NewsChannel (OCN), five broadcast affiliates and two trade magazines: World Trade and USA Exports.
Freedom said it is planning to launch an interactive television operation in the county next year, in partnership with IT Network of Dallas.
