FOUNTAIN VALLEY : City to Seek Impact Report on Bridges

Share

The City Council has agreed that an environmental impact report is needed before any decision is made to build two bridges across the Santa Ana River.

Council members approved a recommendation to the County Board of Supervisors proposing that an environmental impact report be prepared to further analyze the feasibility of the crossings and alternatives. The council took no position on the construction of the bridges.

Mayor Laurann Cook said the report is necessary because it would illustrate the impacts on the city.

“We don’t have enough information,” Cook said. “I need the broad picture presented before I can make a decision.”

The council held a public hearing on the controversial bridges, one of which would link Garfield Avenue in Fountain Valley with Gisler Avenue in Costa Mesa. The other would connect 19th Street in Costa Mesa with Banning Avenue in Huntington Beach.

The council also approved a tentative agreement among four cities--Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach--to share the cost of preparing the environmental report. Cook said Fountain Valley is the first city to sign the pact.
