GARDEN GROVE : City Won’t Donate $5,000 for Fireworks

Citing tough economic times, City Council members said this week that the city can’t afford to contribute $5,000 for a fireworks show that the Lions Club plans for next July 4.

“This would improve the quality of life in Garden Grove, but you picked the worst possible time to start,” Councilman Bruce A. Broadwater told Lions Club representatives Tuesday night. “The city is financially strapped.”

Dave Stewart, Lions Club first vice president, said after the council meeting that his organization expects to continue with plans for the event and may seek corporate sponsors to help defray the estimated $17,000 cost to put on the fireworks show.

Stewart said the Garden Grove Unified School District reduced the $2,000 fee to rent the Bolsa Grande High School Stadium for the fireworks show to about $450.

Proceeds will go to the Lions Club vision and hearing programs for needy students.
