If you like your jazz mixed with a little world music and chamber melodies, you’ll probably like the Vinny Golia Large Ensemble. Heck, even if your a jazz purist, you might still like Vinny simply for his ambition.

The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, which will perform Saturday at the Los Angeles Harbor College Music Recital Hall, has 25 members who since 1982 have performed eclectic compositions.

The melodies feature hints of jazz, world music, chamber music and other styles. The group has a repertoire of 60 compositions played on instruments including woodwinds, trumpets, saxophone, trombones, hand drums, piano and violin.

The ensemble recently performed for German radio and at a festival in Poland. The group has also performed in New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Canada.

Golia also has three recordings: the debut three-disc set, Compositions for Large Ensemble; the follow-up album, Facts of Life, and Pilgrimage to Obscurity, which received a four-star rating in the jazz magazine Down Beat’s July, 1991, issue.

All were recorded on Golia’s own label, Nine Winds Records. In 1990, Jazz Times honored him for his bass saxophone playing. He also contributed to the soundtracks for “Star Trek IV” and “The Lost Boys.”
