During its annual reorganization, the City Council unanimously picked Norman Z. Eckenrode to take over as mayor, the third time he has held the position during his 13 years on the council.

Michael L. Maertzweiler, who was elected to the council in November, 1992, was picked as mayor pro tem at Tuesday’s meeting.

Eckenrode takes over the post from Maria Moreno.

During a brief speech after the vote, Moreno said she will continue to hold the monthly breakfast and town hall meetings that she started during her mayoral term.

Eckenrode said he will focus on the issue of affordable housing, with a goal of expanding the city’s first-time home buyer program.

“That program has been wildly successful, and I would like to see it help even more people,” he said.

Eckenrode’s term began Tuesday and lasts one year.
